Mitchell Tabbed GNAC Men's Basketball Player of the Week

WINTHROP, Mass. – Senior guard Tyree Mitchell (East Hartford, Conn.) of the University of Saint Joseph (USJ) men's basketball team was named the Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) Player of the Week, it was announced by the conference front office on Monday afternoon in its twelfth weekly report of the 2023-24 season. It marks the second career GNAC weekly honor for Mitchell and the second for the USJ men's basketball team this season.

Mitchell helped power USJ to a 2-0 week and back to the top spot in the GNAC standings, putting on a scoring display over a pair of conference contests to keep the Blue Jays undefeated in GNAC play. The senior guard went off for a career-high 42 points on 13-of-19 shooting from the floor while collecting his 1,000th career point and bringing down six boards in a blowout victory, 108-77, over Dean on Tuesday evening. Then, on Saturday, the East Hartford product was one rebound shy of a double-double as he scored a game-high 26 points on 9-of-14 shooting and brought down nine rebounds to pace the Blue Jays in a huge victory over intrastate and conference rival Albertus Magnus, 100-86. Overall on the week, Mitchell averaged 34.0 points per game on 67/62/84 shooting splits while grabbing 7.5 rebounds per game and dishing out two assists per game.

Mitchell currently leads the team in scoring at 18.1 points per game, which ranks fifth-best in the GNAC. He leads the conference in three-point field-goal percentage (50.6%) and free-throw percentage (90.8%) and ranks fourth in overall field-goal percentage (58.0%). Nationally, he ranks 14th in free-throw percentage and 41st in overall field-goal percentage.

Mitchell and the men's basketball team head back on the road, beginning a two-game road trip at Johnson & Wales University on Wednesday, February 7. Tipoff against the Wildcats inside the Wildcat Center in Providence, R.I., is set for 7:30 p.m.
