Men's Lacrosse Suffers Setback on the Road at Lasell Wednesday Night

NEWTON, Mass. – The University of Saint Joseph (USJ) men's lacrosse team saw its three-game winning streak snapped on the road at Lasell University (Lasell), falling 8-6 Wednesday night during Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) South Division play at Grellier Field in Newton, Mass. With the result, the Blue Jays drop to 5-6 overall, 3-2 in conference play, and 2-1 in the South Division, while the Lasers improve to 8-4 overall, 7-1 in the GNAC, and 4-0 in the South Division.

KEY MOMENTS 

  • Sophomore attack Matthew Wurszt (Wilbraham, Mass.) opened the scoring for the Blue Jays, receiving a pass from graduate student midfielder Aidan D'Amato (Tolland, Conn.) before rifling the first recorded shot of the game into the goal, establishing a 1-0 edge at the 13:51 mark.
  • Graduate student attack Evan Baden (Burlington, Conn.) quickly increased the lead to 2-0, netting a solo strike with 11:50 on the clock.
  • However, the Lasers scored three unanswered goals to close out the quarter, taking a 3-2 edge into the second quarter.
  • Lasell carried the momentum into the second, finding the back of the net at the 14:04 mark to increase the deficit to 4-2.
  • D'Amato ended the Lasers' run, scoring his first goal of the game to cut the gap to one, 4-3, with 7:59 left in the half.
  • The Blue Jays tied the game minutes later, as Wurszt dished out a pass to senior midfielder Christian Decker (Bristol, Conn.), who turned and fired a shot past the Lasell netminder, tying the game at 4-4 with 3:19 on the clock.
  • Lasell retook the lead late, scoring at the 1:45 mark to establish a 5-4 edge entering the halftime break.
  • Baden struck first for USJ to open the third, netting his second goal of the game at the 9:30 mark, tying the game at 5-5.
  • Graduate student Kevin Carr (West Hartford, Conn.) then swung the lead back in USJ's favor, scoring a man-up goal with 2:22 on the clock, sending USJ into the fourth with a 6-5 lead.
  • However, the Lasers responded with three unanswered goals to reestablish the advantage, 8-6, with 6:17 left to play.
  • The Blue Jays were unable to mount a comeback, as Lasell held on for the win, 8-6.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE

  • Baden paced the offense with two goals.
  • Wurszt and D'Amato both dished out one assist.
  • Sophomore defenseman Vinny Pusateri III (Fitchburg, Mass.) caused a team-high five turnovers.
  • Pusateri III also corralled a team-best three ground balls.
  • Graduate student netminder Trey McCann played all 60 minutes in the cage, tallying eight saves on the night.
  • Lasell dominated at the faceoff "X", posting a 16-for-18 record.

UP NEXT

The Blue Jays return home for the teams' penultimate home game of the 2025 regular season, welcoming Rivier University for a GNAC interdivisional game on Saturday, April 12. Opening faceoff against the Raiders at the USJ Lacrosse Field in West Hartford, Conn., is slated for 3:00 p.m.
