Men’s Lacrosse Rolls Past Regis, 19–7, Saturday Afternoon
WESTON, Mass. – The University of Saint Joseph (USJ) men's lacrosse team continued its perfect start to Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) play with a 19–7 victory over Regis College (Regis) on Saturday afternoon at Regis Stadium. With the win, the Blue Jays extended their winning streak to seven games, improving to 9–1 overall and 6–0 in conference action, while the Pride fell to 3–4 overall and 2–3 in league play.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- USJ opened the scoring at the 10:57 mark, as sophomore attack Dominic Oakes (Southington, Conn.) set up senior attack Freeman Johnson (Swanzey, N.H.) to give the Blue Jays a 1-0 lead.
- The Blue Jays doubled the advantage shortly after, with freshman midfielder Brady Stevens (Laconia, N.H.) finishing a man-up opportunity with 10 minutes remaining in the first quarter.
- Regis answered with a man-up score of its own, but junior faceoff specialist Benjamin Bausch (Holliston, Mass.) countered at the 6:32 mark to keep USJ in front, 3-1.
- The Pride added a late tally to close the gap to 3-2 heading into the second quarter.
- USJ seized control in the second, as senior attack Nick Pestrichello (Newington, Conn.) buried consecutive chances before setting up junior midfielder Brenden Tedeschi (Orange, Vt.) during a three-goal surge that pushed the lead to 6-2 at the 12:45 mark.
- After Regis briefly slowed the run, Pestrichello and Oakes each found the back of the net to stretch the margin to 8-3 with 10:53 left in the half.
- The Pride chipped in another, but Pestrichello added his fourth finish of the day and Stevens followed with his second, while the USJ defense held firm to carry a 10-4 advantage into halftime.
- USJ kept its foot on the gas in the third, as Oakes cashed in on a man-up chance just 23 seconds into the half to make it 11-4.
- Regis responded at the 11:08 mark, but Pestrichello answered just six seconds later. Oakes then completed his hat trick at 9:16, extending the lead to 13-5.
- The Pride halted the momentum with another score, but Johnson closed the quarter with his second of the game, giving USJ a 14-6 cushion entering the fourth.
- The Blue Jays continued to pull away in the final frame, as sophomore midfielder Chris Clancy (Glastonbury, Conn.) recorded a pair, while graduate student attack Brycen Kennedy (Southington, Conn.), junior attack Adam Pelletier (North Kingstown, R.I.) and freshman attack Landon Lapointe (Lutz, Fla.) each added one to make it 19-6.
