Patti Sciglimpaglia No-Hits Daniel Webster
WEST HARTFORD, Conn. – It keeps getting better for University of Saint Joseph freshman Patti Sciglimpaglia.
On Monday, the Norwalk, Conn. native was named the GNAC Rookie of the Week. Tuesday, she threw the third no-hitter in school history in the first game of a doubleheader as the Blue Jays swept Daniel Webster, 3-2 and 8-0 Tuesday at St. Joseph.
Saint Joseph improved to 17-9 overall. The Blue Jays have their best record after 26 games since 2001, when they were also 17-9. Daniel Webster dropped to 8-14. Emily Hummel (Hebron, Conn.) threw a three-hit, five-inning shutout for USJ in the late game.
Sciglimpaglia (8-4, 3.23 ERA) struck out six, walked five, had two reach by errors and another on a dropped third strike, but no Daniel Webster player hit safely. It was the first no-hitter by a St. Joseph pitcher since April 18, 2008 when Sara Dudley no-hit Mount Ida in a 10-0, five-inning win. Karoline Palin also threw a no-hitter for the Blue Jays in 1999.
USJ started the scoring in the first game with two second-inning runs. Patti Sciglimpaglia singled up the middle and Sarah Miller (Southington, Conn.) had a bunt single. Shauna Sullivan (Rocky Hill, Conn.) reached on a force out at third, but she and Miller moved up to second and third on an illegal pitch. Emily Vigue (Lebanon, Conn.) then followed with a single up the middle to drive in two runs.
The Blue Jays picked up their other run in the fifth inning. Colleen Ecsedy (Ashford, Conn.) had a leadoff single and came around on a two-out triple by Hummel.
Daniel Webster got on the board in the sixth inning. Abigail Goslin (Wrentham, Mass.) reached on a dropped third strike, advanced on an error and a sacrifice and scored on a ground out to second by Theresa DiSantis (Hinsdale, Mass.). In the DWC seventh, Amanda Wilson led off with a walk, advanced on two wild pitches and scored on a bunt by Ashley England (Old Town, Maine). The Eagles ended the game with runners at first and third.
In the second game, Saint Joseph scored a run in the first, five in the second and two in the third and the game was ended after five innings by the mercy rule. Haley McCall (Lebanon, Conn.) was 2-for-2 with two runs scored and two RBI for the Blue Jays, who had 10 hits. Mary Sciglimpaglia had two hits and two runs scored for USJ and Jocelyn Grady (Meriden, Conn.) went 2-for-2. Stephanie Valerio (Wolcott, Conn.) drove in two runs with an RBI-single in the second and a sacrifice fly in the third. Hummel (7-4, 3.23 ERA) struck out four and walked one.
Saint Joseph hosts Suffolk Sat. April 13 in a GNAC doubleheader, beginning at noon.
