WEST HARTFORD, Conn. – The University of Saint Joseph softball team split a doubleheader with visiting Albertus Magnus Wednesday in Great Northeast Athletic Conference action.
The Blue Jays won the opener 3-1 before the Falcons grabbed the late game 11-7. USJ ended the day 24-10 overall and 14-6 in the GNAC; Albertus Magnus is 20-12 overall and 11-9 in the conference.
USJ scored two runs in the first inning of the first game to lead 2-0. Morgan Skoly (Vernon, Conn.) singled to right and Patti Sciglaimaglia (Norwalk, Conn.) homered to center. It was seventh of the year, breaking the USJ single-season record she shared with Ashley Gall, who hit six in 2013.
Patti Sciglimpaglia allowed three hits, struck out eight and walked five for her 15th win of the season.
Albertus scored the decisive second-game runs early, putting up five runs in the second inning and four more in the third. Alyssa Puccilli (Milford, Conn.) went 4-for-5 with five RBI for Albertus. She had a two-run single in the second inning, an RBI-single in the third, a two-run double in the fourth and a single in the sixth. Melissa Castillo (Taftville, Conn.) also had a key, two-out, two-run single to cap the second-inning rally.
For USJ, Mary Sciglimpaglia had three hits, and Skoly, Ercoli, Patti Sciglimpaglia and Ashley Tucker (Middletown, Conn.) had two hits apiece.
USJ is at Johnson & Wales, Sat. April 30, in a conference doubleheader at noon. Albertus hosts Emmanuel in a GNAC twinbill, also Saturday at noon.
