Basketball Opens with Win
WEST HARTFORD, Conn. – Senior Mary Hyde (Derby, Conn.) and junior Heather Framski (Prospect, Conn.) both had double-doubles as the University of Saint Joseph basketball team opened its season with a 72-42 win over Morrisville State in the 16th Annual USJ Blue Jay Tip-Off Classic.
St. Joseph will play Union College in Saturday's 2 p.m. final. Union defeated Purchase College 51-46 in Friday's other game. Morrisville State will face Purchase at noon in Saturday's consolation game.
Hyde had a game-high 19 points to go along with 10 rebounds, six assist and five steals for USJ while Framski had 15 points and a game-high 11 rebounds. Brianna Ferraro (Waterbury, Conn.) had 10 points for the Blue Jays, while Shauna Sullivan (Rocky Hill, Conn.) had 10 rebounds and Devon Diliberto (Waterbury, Conn.) had eight points and seven assists.
USJ held Morristown (0-1) to 25 percent shooting (16-for-64), led 39-18 at halftime and outrebounded the Mustangs 53-42.
Caitlyn Adams (Sherburne, N.Y.) led Morrisville State with 13 points and Jennel Paul (Brooklyn, N.Y.) had 12.
Union 51, Purchase 46: Madeline Granato (Rocky Hill, Conn.) had a team-high 15 points to lead Union to a victory in Friday's first game, which was the season-opener for both.
The teams were tied at 44 when Granato hit the first of two free throws with 1:55 left to put Union ahead by one. The second missed, but Union controlled the rebound and Granato hit a huge three-pointer 12 seconds later and the Dutchwomen would not relinquish the lead. Kristin Schmidt (Suffern, N.Y.) had nine rebounds for Union.
Jazmin Garcia (Peekskill, N.Y.) had game-highs of 17 points and 12 rebounds for Purchase. Jeidar Cole (Bronx, N.Y.) added 10 points for the Panthers, which led 25-21 at halftime.
