Basketball Wins Again

NEWTON, Mass. – University of Saint Joseph senior Mary Hyde (Derby, Conn.) and junior Heather Framski (Prospect, Conn.) scored 16 points apiece to lead the Blue Jays to a 71-59 victory Tuesday over Lasell College in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference match-up.

USJ improved to 10-10 overall and 3-3 in the GNAC. The Blue Jays have won three consecutive GNAC games. Lasell is 9-10 overall and 2-3 in the conference.

USJ senior Shauna Sullivan (Rocky Hill, Conn.) recorded her third double-double of the season with 11 boards and 10 points in the game and junior Brianna Ferraro (Waterbury, Conn.) scored 10 points. Framski added seven rebounds while had had five assists and three steals.

Junior Alexis Chappell (Springfield, Mass.) led the Lasers with a game-high 18 points and eight rebounds.

St. Joseph led for over 31 minutes including the final 28-plus minutes of the game, but the opening stages were close with Lasell leading for much of the early going. A Ferraro jump shot gave USJ its first lead at 14-13, 7:16 into the game. A three-pointer from Hyde erased the Blue Jays final deficit of the game and put USJ up 19-18 after 9:16. The teams were even at 22 when Stephanie DeJesus (Meriden, Conn.) hit a three-pointer with 8:43 left in the half to put the Blue Jays ahead for good.

USJ led 34-35 at halftime and its biggest lead was 18 at 57-39 with 8:42 left in the game. USJ limited its turnovers to nine while forcing Lasell into 22 and outscoring the Lasers 24-8 off turnovers.
