Women's Hoops Season Concludes in GNAC Quarterfinals at Saint Joseph's College
STANDISH, MAINE — The seventh-seeded University of Saint Joseph (USJ) women's basketball team saw its 2025–26 season come to a close Wednesday night, falling to second-seeded Saint Joseph's College of Maine (SJC), 87–47, in the Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) Quarterfinals inside the Harold Alfond Center in Standish, Maine. With the result, the Blue Jays conclude the year at 8–18, while the Monks improved to 16-10 overall.
HOW IT HAPPENED
After sophomore guard Sequoia Turcotte Briggs (Andover, Conn.) scored the opening basket of the game, the Monks responded with a 10-0 stretch, holding a 10-2 edge at the 5:42 mark. USJ closed the gap back to four, 11-7, after a 5-1 stretch was capped off by a Turcotte Briggs triple at the 4:17 mark. SJC answered with a 7-3 run to close the quarter, extending the deficit to eight, 18-10, entering the second quarter.
The Monks carried the momentum into the second, utilizing a 9-2 opening run to establish a 27-12 lead with 9:16 on the clock. Sophomore guard Ella Kulas (Cheshire, Conn.) put a stop to the run with a 4-0 solo stretch, but SJC countered with an 8-0 run to break open a 35-16 edge at the 1:57 mark. The two teams traded blows to end the half, as SJC took a 39-22 lead into the break.
The Monks continued to control the game in the second half, jumping out to a 10-4 run that increased the deficit to 50-26 with 3:43 on the clock. USJ responded with a 9-5 run - fueled by five points from sophomore guard Trinity Cruz (Windsor Locks, Conn.) - to close the score to 54-34. However, SJC scored the final points of the quarter to take a 56-34 edge into the fourth. The Monks outscored the Blue Jays 31-12 in the fourth, securing the win, 87-47.
