BOSTON, Mass. -- University of Saint Joseph junior captain Erika Leitao (Southington, Conn.) and sophomore Dayna Gambino (Newington, Conn.) led the Blue Jays with four goals apiece, but USJ came out on the short end of a 22-11 Great Northeast Athletic Conference game against Simmons College Saturday at Winsor Field.
Simmons improved to 1-1 overall; Saint Joseph is 0-2 and both were playing their first league game of the season.
Ashley Sheehan scored 26 seconds into the game for Simmons to start the scoring, but Leitao's first goal evened things, 4:00 into the contest. A pair of Simmons goals put the Sharks on top, but Gambino's first tally, off an assist from Rachel Foster (Newington, Conn.) pulled the Blue Jays within 3-2 after 12:16. Simmons scored the next four goals to take control and the Sharks led 11-6 at halftime.
Francesca Mastria (Higganum, Conn.) scored a goal in each half for St. Joseph and Eliza Doane (Suffield, Conn.) scored her first collegiate goal for the Blue Jays.
St. Joseph returns to action Wed. March 20, hosting Norwich in a GNAC game at 4 p.m.
