Women’s Lacrosse Dominates Dean at Home for Sixth Straight Win, 25–1, Tuesday Night
WEST HARTFORD, Conn. – The University of Saint Joseph (USJ) women's lacrosse team extended its winning streak to six games with a dominant 23–1 victory over visiting Dean College in Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) action Tuesday night at the USJ Lacrosse Field.
With the win, the Blue Jays improved to 9–5 overall and 8–2 in conference play, while the Bulldogs dropped their second straight contest and fell to 3–11 overall and 3–8 in GNAC action.
HOW IT HAPPENED
USJ seized control early, scoring the game's first 11 goals during a decisive opening quarter. Freshman attack Kailey Krusewski (Newington, Conn.) opened the scoring at the 12:55 mark before junior midfielder Reagan Buscetto (Montville, Conn.) and junior attack Anna LeGault (Colchester, Conn.) fueled a relentless offensive surge that gave the Blue Jays an 11–0 advantage after the first 15 minutes.
The Blue Jays added four more goals in the second quarter to carry a commanding 15–1 lead into halftime. Senior midfielder Alana Picard (Windsor Locks, Conn.) scored twice in the period, while Buscetto capped the half with her fifth goal of the night. Dean's lone goal of the game came on a free-position attempt with 3:03 remaining before the break.
USJ continued to apply pressure in the second half, scoring four goals in both the third and fourth quarters to close out the victory. Senior attack Bella Gonzalez (West Hartford, Conn.), freshman attack Alexa Haber (Chicopee, Mass.), sophomore midfielder Kaylynn Lapointe (Bristol, Conn.), junior midfielder Paige Rieger (New Fairfield, Conn.), Krusewski, and Picard all found the back of the net after halftime.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
- Buscetto led all players with an 11-point performance, totaling five goals and six assists. She now has 19 goals and 18 assists on the season.
- LeGault finished with five goals, increasing her season total to 49.
- Krusewski added three goals and four assists to push her team-leading season total to 56 goals.
- Picard contributed four points (three goals, one assist) while also posting seven ground balls, four draw controls, and seven caused turnovers.
- Rieger recorded six points on two goals and four assists.
- Eight different Blue Jays scored in the contest.
As a team, USJ outshot Dean 45–7 and held a 31–3 advantage in shots on goal. The Blue Jays also won the draw control battle, 19–6, forced 23 Bulldog turnovers, and committed just 10 turnovers of their own.
In goal, senior Colleen Stringer (Point Lookout, N.Y.) earned the win after making one save in the first half, while sophomore Erika Horne (Killingly, Conn.) recorded one save over the final 30 minutes.
