Women's Swimming & Diving Third After First Day Of GNAC Championships

WELLESLEY, Mass. – The University of Saint Joseph (USJ) women's swimming and diving team began the 2023 Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) championships strongly on Friday, tallying 177 points to sit in third place after the first day of action. Freshmen Julianna Violette (Rocky Hill, Conn.) and Chandler Douglas (North Haven, Conn.) brought home medals for the Blue Jays, as Violette finished second in the 400-yard IM, while Douglas placed third in the 3-meter diving event.

TOP PERFORMANCES 

  • 200 Yard Medley Relay – The team of sophomores Gabriela Targonska (Newington, Conn.) and Amy Mamica (Rocky Hill, Conn.), senior Morgan Beebe (Ellington, Conn.) and freshman Angelina Bernardi (Middlebury, Conn.) finished in sixth place after combining for a time of 2:05.98.
  • 400 Yard IM –Violette and Beebe were seeded third and fourth after the preliminaries. Violette improved on her performance in the finals, bringing home the silver medal and receiving All-Conference accolades after posting a time of 5:20.60
  • 50 Yard Butterfly –Mamica swam a personal-best time of 28.8 seconds during the prelims to be seeded third for the finals. In the finals, she recorded a time of 29.10 seconds to finish in seventh.
  • 100 Yard Breaststroke –Bernardi qualified for the finals, finishing eighth after the prelims with a time of 1:29.55. During the finals, she also finished in eighth place, touching the wall in a time of 1:31.58.
  • 200 Yard Backstroke – Targonska finished in fourth place, recording a time of 2:24.94
  • 1000 Yard Free – Junior Adelina Marcille (Waterford, Conn.) finished sixth in a time of 12:32.61, while sophomore Emily Beyer (Prospect, Conn.) finished in ninth place in a time of 13:02.53.
  • 400 Yard Free Relay – The team of Targonska, Violette, Bernardi and Mamic finished in fifth place after touching the wall in a time of 4:09.95.
  • 3 Meter Diving –Douglas took home the bronze medal, recording a tally of 145.4 points to earn All-Conference recognition. Junior Jaelynn Solorzano (Wallingford, Conn.) followed closely behind, finishing in fourth with a score of 132.45.

UP NEXT
The Blue Jays continue the GNAC Championships tomorrow, Saturday, February 4. Prelims begin at 10:00 a.m. inside the Boston Sports Institute in Wellesley, Mass, with the 1-meter diving taking place at the Holmes Sports Center on the campus of Simmons University in Boston.
