Omar Breaks Two Records, Blue Jays Sit Second After Opening Day of GNAC Championships
WORCESTER, Mass. – Freshman Sara Omar (Simsbury, Conn.) of the University of Saint Joseph (USJ) women's swimming and diving team set new program records in the 400-yard IM and 1,000-yard freestyle events as the Blue Jays began the 2026 Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) Championships on Friday, tallying 218 points to sit in second place after the first day of action inside the WPI Sports & Recreation Center in Worcester, Mass.
TOP PERFORMANCES
- 200 Yard Medley Relay - The team of Omar, sophomore Charlotte Poltronieri (Enfield, Conn.), sophomore Alina Niemczyk (Vernon, Conn.), and freshman Julia Wysocka (Farmington, Conn.) finished in third place, posting a time of 1:59.47.
- 400 Yard IM - Omar shattered the school record, finishing in second after recording a time of 4:54.57.
- 200 Yard Freestyle - Sophomore Peyton Tyler (Killingworth, Conn.) topped the timing sheet for USJ, placing fourth after finishing with a time of 2:18.08.
- 50 Yard Butterfly - Niemczyk paced the Blue Jays, finishing in second after touching the wall in 28.42 seconds.
- 100 Yard Breaststroke - Niemczyk finished in fifth place, recording a time of 1:14.92.
- 200 Yard Backstroke - Wysocka paced the team in the event, finishing in fourth place with a time of 2:25.05.
- 1,000 Yard Freestyle - Omar broke her second record of the day, topping the timing sheet with an impressive time of 11:13.85.
- 400 Yard Freestyle Relay - The team of Omar, Poltronieri, Wysocka, and sophomore Delaney Towey (West Hartford, Conn.) finished in third place, combining for a time of 4:01.31.

The Blue Jays continue the GNAC Championships tomorrow, Saturday, February 7. Prelims begin at 10:00 a.m. inside the WPI Sports & Recreation Center in Worcester, Mass., with finals beginning at roughly 6:00 p.m.
