Women's Tennis Fights Hard, Falls to UMass Dartmouth, 5-4

WEST HARTFORD, Conn. - The University of Saint Joseph (USJ) women's tennis team fell in a tightly contested match, 5-4, to the visiting UMass Dartmouth Corsairs at the Elizabeth Ferry Speer Tennis Complex Wednesday afternoon in West Hartford. The Blue Jays won one of three doubles matches and three of six singles matches.

KEY MOMENTS

  • The No. 1 doubles team of Kathleen Gilland (Wethersfield, Conn.) and Emily Kerr (Portland, Conn.) would fall to the pair of IsaBella Winter and Ailey Riddick, giving the Corsairs the early lead.
  • Liliana Garcia (Wethersfield, Conn.) and Ananya Srivatsav (South Windsor, Conn.) would tie the match up for the Blue Jays during No. 2 doubles, taking home an 8-2 victory.
  • The duo of Julia Michaud (Bristol, Conn.) and Bernae Webb (Bridgeport, Conn.) made up the No. 3 doubles team, and would succumb to an 8-2 defeat as UMass Dartmouth took a 2-1 lead after the doubles matches.
  • Gilland would lead things off for the Blue Jays in No. 1 Singles, but would fall in straight sets, 6-1, 6-2.
  • Kerr would answer back for USJ during No. 2 singles, taking down UMass Dartmouth's Claire Yang in straight sets, 6-2, 6-1.
  • Srivatsav kept the momentum going in No. 4 singles, defeating Riddick in straight sets, 7-5, 6-1. Her victory tied the match for the Blue Jays at 3-3.
  • The Corsairs would take the lead during the No. 5 singles match as Bailey Clarke defeated Michaud in straight sets, 6-0, 6-0.
  • Gia Alvarez (Meriden, Conn.) would level the match in No. 6 singles, picking up the victory, 6-4, 6-1 to make the No. 3 singles match the ultimate decider.
  • Garcia would face UMass Dartmouth's O'Connell in the No. 3 Singles match to decide the overall contest. O'Connell would ultimately defeat Garcia, 6-2, 6-4, taking the match for UMass Dartmouth, 5-4.

"Today was a very competitive match against UMass Dartmouth that came down to the wire on the last singles match," said head coach Karen Piazza. "Everyone played their hearts out and it is a heartbreaker to lose this close one, but the result will make us stronger in the long run."

 NOTES

  • The Corsairs extended their winning streak to five matches with the result.
  • The team of Gilland and Kerr fell to 3-4 on the night. As singles competitors, Gilland moved to 1-6 while Kerr improved to 5-2.
  • With their victory, Garcia and Srivatsav improved to 3-2 in No. 2 doubles. Garcia dropped to 2-4 in singles play, while Srivatsav improved to 3-3.
  • Michaud and Webb would fall to 2-3 at No. 3 doubles on the year. In singles play, Michaud fell to 2-5.

Women's tennis returns back to the courts on Friday, September 30 for a Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) match at home against Lesley University. The match was originally slated to take place on this afternoon. Opening serve between the Blue Jays and Lynx is slated for 3:30 p.m. at the Elizabeth Ferry Speer Tennis Complex.
