Women's Tennis Drops Close Contest to Lesley, 5-4
WEST HARTFORD, Conn. - The University of Saint Joseph (USJ) women's tennis team battled strong, but dropped a close contest, 5-4, to the visiting Lesley University Lynx in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) match this afternoon at the Elizabeth Ferry Speer Tennis Complex in West Hartford. The Blue Jays won one of three doubles matches and three of six singles matches to account for their four points on the day.

KEY MOMENTS
- The No. 1 doubles team of Kathleen Gilland (Wethersfield, Conn.) and Emily Kerr (Portland, Conn.) would fall to the pair of Jessica Legendre and Bella Cotrell, 8-3, giving the Lynx the early lead.
- Liliana Garcia (Wethersfield, Conn.) and Ananya Srivatsav (South Windsor, Conn.) would waste little time knotting up the match for the Blue Jays during No. 2 doubles, taking home an 8-6 victory after defeating Brooke Whitten and Morgan Anderson.
- The duo of Julia Michaud (Bristol, Conn.) and Bernae Webb (Bridgeport, Conn.) made up the No. 3 doubles team, and would succumb to an 8-4 defeat as Lesley took a 2-1 lead after the doubles matches.
- Gilland would lead things off for the Blue Jays in No. 1 Singles, but would fall in straight sets, 6-1, 6-0.
- Kerr would answer back for USJ during No. 2 singles, coming back after dropping the opening set. After winning set two, 6-4, Kerr took the match in the tiebreaker, 10-6.
- Garcia would take part in the No. 3 Singles match for the Blue Jays, fighting hard in the second set, but would ultimately succumb in straight sets, 6-2, 6-4.
- Srivatsav would pull one back for USJ in No. 4 singles, continuing her hot streak by defeating Cottrell in dominating fashion in straight sets, 6-1, 6-1.
- Michaud followed it up with another victory for USJ in No. 5 singles, defeating Lesley's Dai in straight sets, 6-4, 6-2.
- However, Lesley would take the match narrowly, 5-4, after Gia Alvarez (Meriden, Conn.) fell during No. 6 singles, 6-0, 7-6.
QUOTABLE
"It was a very close match today against Lesley," said head coach Karen Piazza. "I'm proud of my players for the way they competed. Many were down in their first sets and improved as their matches went on, figuring out what they needed to do to change things up. We are focusing better and playing with more determination as the season progresses."
NOTES
- The team of Gilland and Kerr fell to 3-5 on the night. As singles competitors, Gilland moved to 1-7 while Kerr improved to 6-2.
- With their victory, Garcia and Srivatsav improved to 4-2 in No. 2 doubles. Garcia dropped to 2-5 in singles play, while Srivatsav improved to 4-3.
- Michaud and Webb would fall to 2-4 at No. 3 doubles on the year. In singles play, Michaud improved to 3-5 with her victory.

Women's tennis returns back to the courts on Tuesday, October 4 for a non-conference match on the road at intrastate foe Western Connecticut State University. Opening serve between the Blue Jays and Wolves is slated for 4:00 p.m. in Danbury.
