Women's Tennis Heads to Simmons for First Round of GNAC Championships

BOSTON – The University of Saint Joseph (USJ) women's tennis team, who earned the No. 6 seed in the upcoming Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) Championships, is set to face the No. 3 seed Simmons in the first round of the 2022 GNAC Championships. First serve against the Sharks is set for 2:30 p.m. at Daly Field in Boston.

PLAYERS TO WATCH

  • Emily Kerr (Portland, Conn.) was on fire during the regular season for USJ, leading the team with an 8-2 mark in No. 2 singles. The senior also received recognition from the GNAC, earning Player of the week honors back on Sep. 12.
  • Liliana Garcia (Wethersfield, Conn.) and Ananya Srivatsav (South Windsor, Conn.) paced the Blue Jays in doubles, boasting a team-best 5-3 record at No. 2 doubles.
  • Libby Weed had an outstanding regular season for the Sharks, leading the team with a 7-4 record in singles play. Weed had played in numerous positions for Simmons, boasting a No. 1 singles record of 0-1, a 2-0 mark at No. 2, a 3-2 record at No. 3 and a 2-1 record at No. 4.
  • Leah Bonis and Sam Margolin had tremendous success in doubles play for the Sharks, pacing the team with a 4-1 mark, splitting time at No. 2 and No. 3 doubles. The pair boasted a perfect 2-0 mark at No. 2 while sporting a 2-1 record at No. 3. 

SERIES HISTORY

  • The Sharks hold a 13-match winning streak against the Blue Jays, sporting a 13-0 edge in matches played since 2010.
  • USJ and Simmons meet for the first time in the postseason since 2015, where the Sharks defeated the Blue Jays, 5-0, in the GNAC semifinals.
  • Earlier this season, the Sharks and Blue Jays faced off at Daly Field in Boston on Sep. 24.
  • During the matchup the Sharks took down the Blue Jays, 8-1.

POSTSEASON HISTORY

  • USJ looks to return to the semifinals for the second year in a row, after reaching the semis in 2021.
  • The Blue Jays sport a 3-6 record in postseason play since the 2010 season.
  • During that span, USJ has reached the semifinals of the GNAC championship three times.
