Women's Tennis Falls to Clark, 6-3, in 2023 Season Opener
WORCESTER, Mass. - The University of Saint Joseph (USJ) women's tennis team dropped its season opener on the road at Clark University, 6-3, during the team's 2023 season opener Friday afternoon at the Corash Tennis Courts in Worcester, Mass. The Cougars took two out of the three doubles matches, before winning four of the six singles matches. With the result, the Blue Jays fall to 0-1 while the Cougars move to 1-0.
KEY MOMENTS
- The No. 2 doubles team of senior Ananya Srivatsav (South Windsor, Conn.) and freshman Jillian Milo (Southington, Conn.) gave Clark's Crisi Patel and Olivia Shipley a close battle, but the Cougars would take home an 8-7 (8-5) victory to gain an early 1-0 edge in the match,
- Senior Kathleen Gilland (Wethersfield, Conn.) and sophomore Liliana Garcia (Wethersfield, Conn.) also had a close battle at No. 1 doubles, but would fall to the Cougar's duo of Maeve McEnroe and Merielle Kane, 8-6, as Clark took a 2-0 lead.
- The Blue Jays bounced back at No. 3 doubles, as the team of sophomore Gia Alvarez (Meriden, Conn.) and freshman Nina Gardella (Lebanon, Conn.) secured an 8-5 victory over Clark's Emma Allen and Amy Mavin to cut the hosts lead to 2-1 after the doubles portion of the match.
- Gilland faced off at No. 1 singles against Clark's Hannah Russo to kicked off the singles portion, but Russo secured an 8-2 victory to increase the Cougars lead to 3-1.
- Kane continued the Cougars' momentum at No. 3 singles, dispatching USJ's Srivatsav, 8-4, to increase the hosts' lead to 4-1.
- Garcia matched up with McEnroe at No. 2 singles, which featured another closely contested match, but McEnroe outlasted Garica, taking a narrow 8-6 victory to secure the match for Clark, 5-1.
- Alvarez was able to pull one back for USJ at No. 4 singles, making quick work of Patel to snatch an 8-4 victory and cut the score to 5-2.
- Milo caried the momentum into No. 5 singles, defeating Clark's Allen, 8-6, to cut the gap to 5-3.
- No. 6 singles featured the closest battle of the singles portion of the match, as USJ's Daynah Echevarria (New Britain, Conn.) and Mavin fought to a tiebreaker, but the Cougars came out on top, 8-7 (7-5), and saw Clark win the match, 6-3.
NOTES
- With the result, Clark took the inaugural meeting between the two schools.

The Blue Jays make their 2023 home debut on Monday, September 11, as they welcome Suffolk University to the Elizabeth Ferry Speer Tennis Complex for a non-conference matchup. First serve against the Rams is set for 3:30 p.m.
