Women's Tennis Drops Match at UMass Dartmouth Thursday Afternoon

DARTMOUTH, Mass. - The University of Saint Joseph (USJ) women's tennis team fell on the road at UMass Dartmouth (UMD) 9-0 Thursday afternoon on the UMass Dartmouth Tennis Courts in Dartmouth, Mass. With the result, the Blue Jays fall to 0-3 while the Corsairs move to 3-1.

KEY MOMENTS

  • Senior Ananya Srivatsav (South Windsor, Conn.) and sophomore Liliana Garcia (Wethersfield, Conn.) began that match at No. 1 doubles for USJ, but UMD would secure the early lead as the pair of Isabella Winter and Ailey Riddick defeated the Blue Jays 8-2.
  • The Corsairs carried the momentum into No. 2 doubles, as the team of Maddie Gonzalez and Bailey Clarke defeated the Blue Jays duo of sophomore Gia Alvarez (Meriden, Conn.) and freshman Jillian Milo (Southington, Conn.), 8-2, to take a 2-0 lead.
  • UMD would round out the doubles sweep at No. 3 doubles, as the team of Caroline Lemieux and Zuri Walters took down USJ's freshman Nina Gardella (Lebanon, Conn.) and senior Anna Nemergut (Stratford, Conn.), 8-1, to establish a 3-0 lead.
  • Alvarez would represent the Blue Jays at No. 3 singles, falling in straight sets to Walters, 6-1, 6-0, as the hosts established a 4-0 lead.
  • The Corsairs would secure the match win at No. 1 singles as Winter defeated Garcia in straight sets, 6-1, 6-2.
  • Gonzalez carried the momentum into No. 2 singles, defeating Srivatsav, 6-1, 6-3, to extend the lead to 6-0.
  • Clarke increased the gap to 7-0, taking down Gardella at No. 5 singles, 6-1, 6-3.
  • Freshman Daynah Echevarria (New Britain, Conn.) battled at No . 6 singles, but fell to Lemieux, 6-4, 6-2.
  • Milo and Riddick had an incredibly competitive match to round out the day as Riddick would narrowly beat out Milo, 6-3, 1-6. 10-4.

UP NEXT

The Blue Jays return to West Hartford for the teams' Great Northeast Athletic Conference opener on Saturday, September 16 against Simmons. First serve against the Sharks on the Elizabeth Ferry Speer Tennis Complex is set for noon.
