Women's Tennis Falls on the Road at Colby-Sawyer

SUNAPEE, N.H. - The University of Saint Joseph (USJ) women's tennis team fell on the road to Colby-Sawyer College (CSC), 9-0, during Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) play Saturday afternoon at the Lake Sunapee Yacht Club in Sunapee, N.H. With the result, the Blue Jays move to 3-4 overall and 2-1 in GNAC play while the Chargers move to 2-3-1 overall and 2-0 in conference action.

KEY MOMENTS

  • The Chargers took the lead after No. 2 doubles as the team of Maria Espinosa Lopez and Callie Valeri defeated USJ's duo of senior Ananya Srivatsav (South Windsor, Conn.) and freshman Jillian Milo (Southington, Conn.), 8-0, to grab a 1-0 edge.
  • CSC extended the gap to 2-0 at No. 1 singles, as Grace Carpenter and Elise Hogan defeated the duo of senior Kathleen Gilland (Wethersfield, Conn.) and sophomore Liliana Garcia (Wethersfield, Conn.), 8-4.
  • The Chargers completed the doubles sweep at No. 3 doubles as the team of Mary Thoms and Mei Genest took down sophomore Gia Alvarez (Meriden, Conn.) and freshman Nina Gardella (Lebanon, Conn.), 8-3, increasing the CSC advantage to 3-0.
  • CSC carried the momentum into the singles portion of the match, as Espinosa Lopez defeated Srivastatsav in straight sets, 6-0, 6-0, at No . 3 singles, increasing the gap to 4-0.
  • Carpenter made it 5-0 in favor of the Chargers at No. 1 singles, defeating Gilland, 6-1, 6-1 to secure the match victory.
  • Thomas continued CSC's dominance, defeating Alvarez in straight sets, 6-0, 6-0, at No. 4 singles.
  • Hogan extended the gap to 7-0 at No. 2 singles, taking down USJ's Garcia, 6-2, 6-2.
  • Milo would put up a fight at No. 5 singles, winning the opening set, 6-4, but Genest would fight back winning the second set by a similar score line before winning the tiebreaker, 11-9, to increase CSC's lead to 8-0.
  • Taylor Bentley completed the CSC sweep at No. 6 singles, defeating USJ freshman Daynah Echevarria (New Britain, Conn.), 6-1, 6-0 to give the hosts a 9-0 victory.

The Blue Jays continue a three-match road trip, heading to Regis College on Saturday September 30. First serve against the Pride at the Regis Tennis Courts in Weston, Mass. is set for 1:00 p.m.
