Women's Tennis Falls to Western Connecticut Monday Afternoon

DANBURY, Conn. - The University of Saint Joseph (USJ) women's tennis team fell on the road to intrastate foes Western Connecticut State University (WCSU) 9-0, in non-conference play Monday afternoon on the Westside Tennis Courts in Danbury, Conn. With the result, the Blue Jays drop to 3-5 overall while the Wolves moved to 6-4.

KEY MOMENTS

  • The Wolves opened the match with a victory at No. 1 singles, as Cierra Kitt and Melanie Grasso defeated the duo of senior Kathleen Gilland (Wethersfield, Conn.) and sophomore Liliana Garcia (Wethersfield, Conn.), 8-0.
  • WCSU continued its momentum at N. 3 doubles as the team of Lizzie Contreras and Brooke Stillman took down sophomore Gia Alvarez (Meriden, Conn.) and freshman Nina Gardella (Lebanon, Conn.), 8-2, increasing the WCSU advantage to 2-0.
  • The Wolves rounded out its sweep of the doubles matches at No. 2 doubles as the team of Sarah Cipriano and Sophie Chabonneau defeated USJ's duo of senior Ananya Srivatsav (South Windsor, Conn.) and freshman Jillian Milo (Southington, Conn.), 8-4, to take a 3-0 lead.
  • WCSU carried the momentum into the singles portion of the match, as Kitt defeated Gilland in straight sets at No. 1 singles, 7-6, 6-0, to increase the hosts lead to 4-0.
  • The Wolves secured the victory at No. 6 singles, as Stillman defeated senior Anna Nemergut (Stratford, Conn.), 6-2, 6-4, to increase the gap to 5-0.
  • Diana Rebelo continued the Wolves dominance at No. 4 singles, defeating Alvarez in straight sets, 6-3, 6-2, to increase the lead to 6-0.
  • Cipriano would extend the gap to 7-0 at No. 3 singles, defeating Srivatsav in straight sets, 7-6, 6-3.
  • Milo would put up a fight at No. 5 singles, winning the opening set, 7-5, but Chabonneau would fight back winning the second set, 6-3, before winning the tiebreaker, 10-4, to increase WCSU's lead to 8-0.
  • Grasso completed the WCSU sweep at No. 2 singles, defeating Garcia, 7-6, 6-4, to give the hosts a 9-0 victory. 

UP NEXT

The Blue Jays return home for a non-conference match against Rhode Island College on Thursday, October 5. First serve against the Anchormen on the Elizabeth Ferry Speer Tennis Complex in West Hartford, Conn., is set for 3:30 p.m.
