Women's Tennis Falls at Home to Rhode Island College During Senior Day

WEST HARTFORD, Conn. - The University of Saint Joseph (USJ) women's tennis team fell at home to visiting Rhode Island College (RIC), 9-0, during Senior Day Thursday afternoon at the Elizabeth Ferry Speer Tennis Complex in West Hartford, Conn. Priror to the match, the USJ Department of Athletics held a special presentation, honoring seniors Kathleen Gilland (Wethersfield, Conn.), Anna Nemergut (Stratford, Conn.) and Ananya Srivatsav (South Windsor, Conn.). With the result, the Blue Jays drop to 3-6 overall while the Anchorwomen move to 8-1.

KEY MOMENTS

  • RIC began the match with a victory at No. 2 doubles, as Erica Botelho and Anna Vygoder defeated USJ's duo of Srivatsav and freshman Jillian Milo (Southington, Conn.), 8-2, to take a 1-0 lead.
  • The Anchorwomen continued the momentum at No. 1 singles, as Amiah Sommer and Amara Devinetook down the duo of Gilland and sophomore Liliana Garcia (Wethersfield, Conn.), 8-4, increasing the lead to 2-0.
  • RIC completed the doubles sweep at No. 3 doubles during a closely fought contest as the team of Li hsiu Hou and Lauren Bilodeau defeated sophomore Gia Alvarez (Meriden, Conn.) and freshman Nina Gardella (Lebanon, Conn.), 8-7 (7-5).
  • Botelho continued to roll at No. 1 singles for RIC, defeating Gilland in straight sets, 6-0, 6-0, to increase the gap to 4-0.
  • Devine secured the victory for the Anchorwomen at No. 4 singles, defeating Milo in straight sets, 6-3, 6-1.
  • RIC continued to blank the Blue Jays at No. 3 singles, as Vygoder took down Srivatsav, 6-1, 6-4, increasing the gap to 6-0.
  • Sommer extended the lead to 7-0 after No. 2 singles, defeating Garcia, 6-1, 6-0.
  • The Anchorwomen increased the gap to 8-0 at No. 5 singles, as Hou defeated Alvarez, 6-0, 6-2.
  • RIC completed the sweep at No. 6 singles, as Nemergut would fall in a close battle to Gabriella Centracchio, 7-5, 6-0, securing the 9-0 victory for the visitors.

The Blue Jays round out the 2023 regular season by heading to Regis College, tomorrow, Friday October 6. First serve on the Regis Tennis Courts in Weston, Mass., is set for 4:00 p.m.
