Simmons Holds Off Women's Tennis, 4-3

BRIGHTON, Mass. - The University of Saint Joseph (USJ) women's tennis team was defeated by the Simmons University (Simmons) Sharks in a close 4-3 contest Thursday evening at the Daly Field Athletic Complex in Brighton, Mass. The Sharks secured wins in two of three doubles matches to lock up the first point of the match. That point proved to be the difference maker, as the two teams tied in singles 3-3 in a back and forth battle. The Sharks defended their home court, improving to 1-1 on the season while the Blue Jays fall to 0-2.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • The Blue Jays started fast from the start and took home the win 6-3 at No. 3 doubles thanks to the efforts of Jillian Milo (Southington, Conn.) and sophomore Carolina Mancini (Manchester, Conn.).
  • Simmons responded with a victory at No. 1 doubles, 6-3, and followed it up by holding off the Blue Jays in a thriller at No. 2 doubles, 7-6 (8-6).
  • The Sharks took a 2-0 lead in the match following a win from Emilie LaPointe over senior Lili Garcia (Wethersfield, Conn.) at No. 2 singles in straight sets, 6-2, 6-0.
  • Senior Gia Alvarez (Meriden, Conn.) would suffer a loss at No. 3 singles to the Skarks' Amoli Vad by a 6-2, 6-1 decision, giving the Sharks their third point.
  • The Blue Jays weren't going away just yet. Junior Daynah Echevarria (New Britain, Conn.) earned a solid victory at No. 6 singles, winning both sets by a score of 6-1, cutting the deficit to 3-1.
  • Senior Allie Long (East Hartford, Conn.) brought USJ back within one, 3-2, taking both sets at No. 5 singles, 6-3 and 6-1.
  • USJ would continue their strong effort at No. 4 singles, as Mancini defeated Grace Burke in straight sets 6-4, 6-3, tying the match at 3-3.
  • At No. 1 singles, sophomore Maddie Rossetti (Hamden, Conn.) would fall in straight sets to the Sharks' Masha Shutts 7-5, 7-6 (7-4). Shutts' win secured the victory for Simmons.
