WEST HARTFORD, Conn. - The University of Saint Joseph (USJ) women's tennis team picked up its first win of the 2025 campaign, taking down Farmingdale State College (FSC), 4-3, Tuesday afternoon at the Elizabeth Ferry Speer Tennis Complex in West Hartford, Conn. The Blue Jays secured wins in two of three doubles matches, before senior Gia Alvarez (Meriden, Conn.) clinched the victory for USJ during the final singles match of the day. With the win, the Blue Jays improved to 1-2 on the year, while the Rams dropped to 1-2.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- USJ opened with a victory at No. 2 doubles, as junior Jillian Milo (Southington, Conn.) and senior Allie Long (East Hartford, Conn.) posted a 6-4 win.
- FSC answered at No. 3 doubles, defeating sophomore Carolina Mancini (Manchester, Conn.) and junior Nina Gardella (Lebanon, Conn.), 6-3.
- The Blue Jays secured the doubles point at No. 1, where sophomore Maddie Rossetti (Hamden, Conn.) and senior Lili Garcia (Wethersfield, Conn.) earned a 6-2 decision to give USJ a 1-0 lead heading into singles play.
- The Rams tied the match at 1-1 after Long dropped No. 5 singles, 6-2, 6-0, then took a 2-1 edge when Mancini fell at No. 4 singles, 6-4, 6-2.
- Rossetti pulled the Blue Jays even at 2-2 with a convincing 6-1, 6-4 win at the top flight, before freshman Anna Beauchene (Oakdale, Conn.) gave USJ a 3-2 lead behind a 6-1, 6-2 victory at No. 6 singles.
- Garcia was edged at No. 2, 6-1, 7-5, allowing FSC to pull level once more and set up the decisive match at No. 3 singles.
- Alvarez sealed the win in dramatic fashion, taking the first set 7-6 (7-4), dropping the second 6-1, then rallying for a 6-2 victory in the third to clinch the match for USJ.

The Blue Jays continue a three-match homestand, welcoming intrastate foe WestConn to the Elizabeth Ferry Speer Tennis Complex on Thursday, September 11. First serve against the Wolves is set for 3:00 p.m.
