Women's Tennis Sweeps WestConn, 7-0, Thursday Afternoon
WEST HARTFORD, Conn. - The University of Saint Joseph (USJ) women's tennis team won its second-straight match, sweeping intrastate foe WestConn, 7-0, Thursday afternoon at the Elizabeth Ferry Speer Tennis Complex in West Hartford, Conn. With the win, the Blue Jays improved to 2-2 on the year, while the Wolves started the year at 0-1.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Junior Nina Gardella (Lebanon, Conn.) and senior Bernae Webb (Bridgeport, Conn.) opened the match with a dominating victory at No. 3 doubles, besting their opponents 6-0.
- Sophomore Maddie Rossetti (Hamden, Conn.) and senior Lili Garcia (Wethersfield, Conn.) continued the momentum at No. 1 doubles, securing a 6-1 decision to claim the lone doubles point for USJ.
- Junior Jillian Milo (Southington, Conn.) and senior Allie Long (East Hartford, Conn.) rounded out the doubles sweep at No. 2 doubles, winning 6-1 to send USJ into the singles matches with a 1-0 lead.
- Garcia rounded out her impressive day with a commanding straight-set win at No. 2 singles, 6-0, 6-0, increasing the gap to 2-0.
- Senior Gia Alvarez (Meriden, Conn.) claimed victory at No. 3 singles, besting her opponent, 6-1, 6-1, to establish a 3-0 USJ edge.
- Freshman Anna Beauchene (Oakdale, Conn.) clinched the match victory for the Blue Jays at No. 6 singles, blanking her opponent, 6-0, 6-0, to extend the gap to 4-0.
- Rossetti followed suit with a 6-1, 6-1 win at No. 1 singles, increasing the lead to 5-0.
- Sophomore Carolina Mancini (Manchester, Conn.) continued the Blue Jays' dominating day, winning 6-1, 6-0, at No. 4 singles, giving USJ a 6-0 advantage.
- Junior Daynah Echevarria (New Britain, Conn.) rounded out USJ's perfect afternoon at No. 5 singles, securing a 6-1, 6-2, win to ensure the Blue Jay's swept WestConn, 7-0.
UP NEXT
The Blue Jays head back on the road, rounding out non-conference play against Salve Regina University on Saturday, September 13. First serve against the Seahawks at the Salve Regina Tennis Courts in Newport, R.I., is set for noon.
