BIDDEFORD, Maine – The University of Saint Joseph (USJ) women's tennis team came up short on the road against the University of New England (UNE), 4-3, during Conference of New England (CNE) play Saturday afternoon at the Blue Cyclone Complex in Biddeford, Maine. With the result, the Blue Jays moved to 3-4 overall on the season and 1-1 in CNE play, while the Nor'easters improved to 5-1 overall and 1-1 in league play.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Sophomore Maddie Rossetti (Hamden, Conn.) and senior Gia Alvarez (Meriden, Conn.) started strong, battling past Frank/Hill for a 6–3 win at No. 1 doubles to set the tone.
  • Junior Nina Gardella (Lebanon, Conn.) and senior Bernae Webb (Bridgeport, Conn.) followed with a convincing 6–2 victory over Pelletier/Lambke at No. 3 doubles, clinching the doubles point for USJ.
  • Senior Allie Long (East Hartford, Conn.) and junior Jillian Milo (Southington, Conn.) fought hard at No. 2 doubles but fell to Fritschka/Lamontagne, 6–4.
  • Rossetti carried her doubles momentum into singles, overpowering Frank with a decisive 6–1, 6–1 win at No. 1 singles, increasing the Blue Jays' lead to 2-0.
  • Junior Daynah Echevarria (New Britain, Conn.) battled at No. 5 singles, but couldn't get past Pelletier, falling 6–1, 6–3 as UNE cut the lead in half, 2-1.
  • Long dropped a tough contest at No. 3 singles, with Lamontagne taking it 7–5, 6–2 to tie the team score at 2–2.
  • Gardella showed fight at No. 6 singles, but came up short against Lambke, 6–4, 6–3, as UNE went ahead 3–2.
  • Milo answered back at No. 4 singles in a three-set thriller, outlasting Fritschka 6–4, 2–6, 6–3 to even the match at 3–3.
  • In the deciding match, Alvarez battled deep into a third set against Hill. After taking a dramatic first-set tiebreak, Alvarez would fall 7–6 (7-5), 5–7, 5–7, as UNE clinched the overall victory, 4–3.

UP NEXT

The Blue Jays continue CNE play on Wednesday, September 24, traveling to Roger Williams University. First serve against the Hawks at the RWU Tennis Courts in Bristol, R.I., is set for 4:00 p.m.
