Men’s Soccer Rolls Past Mitchell, 7-0, Tuesday Afternoon

NEW LONDON, Conn. – The University of Saint Joseph (USJ) men's soccer team continued its unbeaten start to Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) play, dismantling intrastate foe Mitchell College (Mitchell), 7-0, on the road Tuesday afternoon at Alumni Field in New London, Conn. With the win, the Blue Jays improved to 4-3-0 overall and 3-0-0 in GNAC action, while the Mariners fell to 1-6-1 and 0-1-1 in conference play.

KEY HIGHLIGHTS

  • USJ wasted little time, striking in the fifth minute as junior midfielder Nate Gabriel (Naugatuck, Conn.) buried the opener to make it 1-0.

  • Just two minutes later, senior forward Emmanuel Ofori (East Hartford, Conn.) doubled the lead off a setup from sophomore midfielder Mario Milardo (Middletown, Conn.).

  • The Blue Jays made it 3-0 in the 14th minute after an own goal by Mitchell.

  • USJ carried the momentum into the second half, with sophomore midfielder Nico Hamzavi (West Hartford, Conn.) scoring in the 47th minute off an assist from junior midfielder Jovany Montano (New Canaan, Conn.) for a 4-0 edge.

  • Sophomore midfielder Elis Sulollari (Cheshire, Conn.) added to the tally in the 54th minute, pushing the margin to 5-0.

  • Ofori struck again in the 66th minute, notching his second goal of the match after another assist from Montano to extend the lead to 6-0.

  • Freshman forward Griffin Neal (Waterford, Conn.) capped the scoring in the 87th minute, finishing off a feed from junior midfielder Jeferson Leon (Cali, Colombia) to seal the 7-0 victory.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE

  • Ofori recorded a brace, increasing his goal tally to a team-high five strikes.

  • Hamzavi and Neal both netted their first goals of the season, while Leon dished out his first assist.

  • Montano recorded his first career assist on the day.

  • Sophomore goalkeeper Will Slayton (Manchester, Conn.) and senior goalkeeper Andres Diosa (Cheshire, Conn.) combined for the shutout, making two saves apiece.

  • USJ outshot Mitchell, 27-11, and led 14-4 in shots on goal.

  • The Blue Jays also earned seven corner kicks to the Mariners' six.

UP NEXT

The Blue Jays return home for a GNAC match against Emmanuel College on Saturday, September 27. Opening kickoff against the Saints at the USJ Soccer Field in West Hartford, Conn., is set for noon.
