Men’s Soccer Blanks Saint Joseph’s (Maine), 3-0, to Advance to GNAC Championship

WEST HARTFORD, Conn. – The top-seeded University of Saint Joseph (USJ) men's soccer team punched its ticket back to the Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) Championship match for the second consecutive season, defeating fourth-seeded Saint Joseph's College of Maine (SJC), 3-0, during Tuesday night's GNAC Semifinal at the USJ Soccer Field in West Hartford, Conn.

The win extends the Blue Jays' unbeaten run at home to 19 straight matches and guarantees they will host the GNAC title game for the second straight season. With the victory, USJ improved to 12-4-2 on the year, while the Monks concluded their 2025 campaign at 8-9-1.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • SJC generated early pressure, forcing sophomore goalkeeper Will Slayton (Manchester, Conn.) to make two saves within the opening 12 minutes.

  • USJ began to find its footing, firing several shots at the Monks' goalkeeper but unable to find the breakthrough.

  • The Blue Jays broke the deadlock late in the first half, as sophomore midfielder Nico Hamzavi (West Hartford, Conn.) swung in a corner kick that was headed on by junior defender Trevor Sousa (Southington, Conn.) before senior forward Emmanuel Ofori (East Hartford, Conn.) headed home to establish a 1-0 USJ edge at the 41:51 mark.

  • The Monks were unable to find an equalizer, and USJ entered the halftime break with a 1-0 advantage.

  • SJC again applied early pressure to start the second half, but it was the Blue Jays who found the game's next goal. Sophomore midfielder Mario Milardo (Middletown, Conn.) unleashed a strike from outside the box that found the bottom corner, doubling the lead to 2-0 at the 57:10 mark.

  • Just three minutes later, Sousa made it 3-0, heading home a cross from Milardo at 60:37.

  • USJ controlled play for the remainder of the match, and the Monks were unable to break through the Blue Jays' back line, sealing a 3-0 shutout victory for the hosts.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE

  • Milardo netted his team-leading 10th goal of the year, while Ofori recorded his ninth.

  • Sousa scored the first goal of his collegiate career.

  • Milardo also tallied his team-leading sixth assist of the season, while Hamzavi picked up his fifth and Sousa his second.

  • Slayton played all 90 minutes in net, recording five saves to improve to 11-2-2 and earn his seventh shutout of the year.

  • USJ outshot SJC, 23-15, including an 11-5 advantage in shots on goal.
