Softball Falls on the Road at Hartford Thursday Afternoon
WEST HARTFORD, Conn. – The University of Saint Joseph (USJ) softball team saw its four-game win streak snapped Thursday afternoon, falling on the road at crosstown foe University of Hartford (Hartford), 14-1, on the Hartford Softball Field in West Hartford, Conn. after five innings.
GAME INFORMATION
Score: Saint Joseph 1, Hartford 14 – 5 innings
Records: USJ (7-8), Hartford (8-11)
Location: Hartford Softball Field | West Hartford, Conn.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Hawks struck first, taking a quick 1 -0 lead in the bottom of the first inning. Hartford looked to tally more runs in the innings, seeing runners on the corners, but freshman Paige Fekete (Watertown, Conn.) left the runners stranded, throwing a timely strikeout to end the inning. However, the Hawks tacked on eight runs in the bottom of the second, increasing their lead to 9-0. USJ looked to answer back, loading the bases in the top of the third as senior catcher Kelsie LaHouse (Coventry, Conn.), freshman outfielder Kaitlyn Ouellette (Wolcott, Conn.) and sophomore shortstop Jenna Zup (Berlin, Conn.) all reached on base. Hartford though prevented any runs from crossing the plate in the third but could not stop the Blue Jays in the fourth.
After sophomore pitcher Alyssa Roberts (Naugatuck, Conn.) set down the Hawks in order in the bottom of the third, senior infielder Liliana Stoddard (Waterford, Conn.) took advantage of an error by the Hawks' third baseman, getting USJ on the board and cutting the gap to 9-1 after the top of the fourth inning. The Hawks would add five more runs in the bottom of the inning though, securing a 14-1 victory after five innings.
IN THE CIRCLE
USJ – Fekete saw the start and picked up the loss (2-3) after allowing eight runs off eight hits, while tallying one strikeout in 1.1 innings of work. Freshman Tessa D'Aquila (Old Saybrook, Conn.) also made an appearance out of the bullpen, allowing two hits in 1.0 innings of work.
HARTFORD – Freshman Carly Mayhood pitched a complete game for the Hawks, taking home the win (1-3) after allowing one unearned run off four hits and tallying six strikeouts.
