Women's Soccer Nipped by Regis, 2-1, Tuesday Night

WESTON, Mass. — The University of Saint Joseph (Conn.) women's soccer team dropped a close 2-1 decision to the Regis College Pride on Tuesday night in Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) action at Regis Stadium in Weston, Mass. With the result, the Blue Jays moved to 4-8-1 overall and 4-4-1 in conference play, while the Pride improved to 6-7-2 and 4-4-1 in the GNAC.

Regis jumped out to an early lead in the fourth minute, as Sienna Santiago found the back of the net off an assist from Julia Benvegnu to make it 1-0. The Pride held that advantage into halftime despite a strong response from USJ, who recorded 10 shots in the opening half.

The Blue Jays drew level in the 78th minute, when graduate forward Elizabeth Garlock (Meriden, Conn.) buried her first goal of the season off a setup from senior forward Alana Picard (Windsor Locks, Conn.).

Regis answered in the 85th minute though, as Alexis Sherry scored what proved to be the game-winner, assisted by Santiago, to secure the victory for the hosts.

USJ held a 20-17 advantage in total shots and a 4-2 margin in corner kicks, while Regis maintained a slight 10-9 edge in shots on goal. Junior goalkeeper Madison Corcoran (Bristol, Conn.) finished with eight saves in the loss for the Blue Jays.
