Women's Soccer Topped by Rivier, 2-1, Saturday Afternoon

WEST HARTFORD, Conn. — The University of Saint Joseph (USJ) women's soccer team dropped a 2-1 decision to Rivier University on Saturday afternoon in Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) action at the USJ Soccer Field. With the result, the Blue Jays moved to 4-9-1 overall and 4-5-1 in conference play, while the Raiders improved to 9-4-2 overall and 8-1-1 in the GNAC.

Rivier jumped out to an early lead in the 14th minute as Leah Morrier scored an unassisted goal—her first of two on the afternoon—to make it 1-0 Raiders.

The Blue Jays responded in the 32nd minute, when senior midfielder Gillian Barresi (Holtsville, N.Y.) buried her first goal of the season off a setup from senior forward Christina Quitoni (Patchogue, N.Y.) and freshman midfielder Saoirse Milikowski (Coventry, Conn.) following a corner kick. The teams entered halftime tied at 1-1.

Morrier struck again in the 49th minute, netting her second unassisted goal of the match, which proved to be the game-winner for the visitors.

The Raiders controlled the offensive tempo, outshooting USJ 25-6 overall and holding a 15-3 edge in shots on goal, though the Blue Jays maintained a slim 6-5 advantage in corner kicks. Junior goalkeeper Madison Corcoran (Bristol, Conn.) was stellar in net, tying her career high with 13 saves to keep USJ within striking distance.
