Volleyball Drops Home Match to Hartford, 3-0, Thursday Night

WEST HARTFORD, Conn. – The University of Saint Joseph (USJ) women's volleyball team dropped a nonconference matchup to crosstown rival the University of Hartford, 3-0 (25-19, 25-20, 25-21), Thursday night inside James A. Calhoun Gymnasium in West Hartford, Conn. With the result, the Blue Jays fell to 2-9 on the season, while the Hawks improved to 3-5.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Hartford opened the first set with a 10-2 run, forcing an early USJ timeout.

  • Junior outside hitter Shaye Harris (Bloomfield, Conn.) responded with back-to-back kills, while graduate outside hitter Emilia Dugas (Newington, Conn.) added a point to settle the Blue Jays.

  • USJ clawed back within 17-13 after consecutive points from sophomore setter Gabi Wanner (Southington, Conn.), but Hartford closed strong to take the set, 25-19.

  • The second set was neck-and-neck through the midpoint, with nine ties and four lead changes.

  • Harris connected on two kills in a three-point spurt that put USJ up 12-11.

  • Junior middle blocker Vivian Pawloski (Wallingford, Conn.) added a kill to even things again at 16-all.

  • Hartford used a 6-1 run late to gain breathing room, holding on for a 25-20 win despite a late Dugas kill.

  • USJ started strong in the third set, with Harris, Dugas, and junior right side Karla Flores (Oakdale, Conn.) each recording early kills to give the Blue Jays a 13-11 lead.

  • Wanner chipped in a service ace to extend the margin to 15-13.

  • Hartford flipped momentum with a 5-1 run, moving ahead 20-17.

  • Harris delivered a late kill to bring USJ within 23-21, but the Hawks capitalized on the final two points to secure the set, 25-21, and the sweep.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE

  • Harris paced the Blue Jays with 13 kills and added five digs.

  • Dugas tallied 10 kills and a team-high 16 digs for her first double-double of the season.

  • Wanner directed the offense with 28 assists and added a block and service ace.

  • Sophomore libero Alyssa Dugas (Newington, Conn.) chipped in 13 digs.

  • USJ hit .134 as a team, while Hartford posted a .195 attack percentage.
