Strong Second Half Powers Men's Soccer Past Lasell, 5-3, Wednesday

NEWTON, Mass. – The University of Saint Joseph (USJ) men's soccer team battled back from a halftime deficit, scoring four unanswered goals in the second half en route to a 5-3 road victory over Lasell University in Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) play Wednesday afternoon at Taylor Field. With the win, the Blue Jays improved to 5-3-1 overall and remained unbeaten in GNAC play at 4-0-1, while the Lasers dropped to 3-5-2 and 1-2-2 in GNAC action.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • USJ wasted little time, striking in the third minute when senior forward Emmanuel Ofori (East Hartford, Conn.) muscled off numerous defenders before putting away the opener to establish a 1-0 lead.

  • The Lasers responded quickly, equalizing less than three minutes later through Daniel Faynstein.

  • Lasell pulled in front in the 39th minute as Owen O'Brien found the back of the net to give the hosts a 2-1 lead entering halftime.

  • The Blue Jays roared back early in the second half as Ofori headed home a goal off a rebound from junior defender Trevor Sousa (Southingon, Conn.) in the 49th minute to level the score at 2-2.

  • Sophomore midfielder Mario Milardo (Middletown, Conn.) delivered the go-ahead strike in the 69th minute, finishing off a feed from sophomore forward Griffin Neal (Waterford, Conn.) to put USJ ahead, 3-2.

  • Just six minutes later, junior midfielder Nate Gabriel (Naugatuck, Conn.) extended the lead to 4-2 after getting past the Lasell netminder and slotting the ball into an open net.

  • Senior defender Nicholas Simpson (Mansfield, Conn.) converted from the penalty spot in the 90th minute to cap USJ's scoring at 5-2.

  • Lasell scored their own late penalty kick seconds later, but the Blue Jays closed out the 5-3 win.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE

  • Ofori recorded his third brace of the season, bringing his season total to a team-high seven goals.

  • Simpson scored his first goal of the year, while Neal dished out his first assist.

  • Sophomore goalkeeper Will Slayton (Manchester, Conn.) made five saves to pick up the win, improving to 4-2-1 on the year.

  • USJ outshot Lasell, 27-15, including a 16-8 edge in shots on goal.

  • The Blue Jays also held a 7-4 advantage in corner kicks.

UP NEXT

The Blue Jays return to West Hartford for a three-game homestand, starting with a matchup against Rivier University on Saturday, October 4. Opening kickoff against the Raiders at the USJ Soccer Field is set for 2:30 p.m.
