Volleyball Drops Away Tri-Match to Colby-Sawyer and UMass Boston

NEW LONDON, N.H. – The University of Saint Joseph (USJ) women's volleyball team dropped a pair of matches on Saturday, falling 3-0 to Colby-Sawyer College (CSC) in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) contest and 3-0 to UMass Boston (UMB) in a neutral-site non-conference match at the Hogan Sports Center in New London, N.H. With the results, the Blue Jays fell to 2-11 overall on the season and 0-1 in GNAC play.

CSC 3, USJ 0 (25-16, 25-15, 25-19)

  • Colby-Sawyer claimed the opening set, 25-16, using four service aces during a decisive run midway through.

  • Junior outside hitter Shaye Harris (Bloomfield, Conn.) tallied three kills in the frame, while junior middle blocker Sofia Weiss (Babylon, N.Y.) and sophomore middle blocker Vivian Pawloski (Wallingford, Conn.) added kills to keep USJ within striking distance.

  • The Blue Jays showed fight in set two, taking a 4-1 lead after consecutive service aces from Harris.

  • The Chargers responded with an 11-2 run behind strong serving, pulling ahead and closing the set, 25-15.

  • In the third, Harris and graduate outside hitter Emilia Dugas (Newington, Conn.) added kills during a late rally, but Colby-Sawyer held firm to seal the match, 25-19.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE

  • Harris led USJ with eight kills and six digs.

  • Sophomore libero Alyssa Dugas (Newington, Conn.) paced the defense with 10 digs.

  • Weiss added three kills and five digs.

  • Yazmer chipped in three kills with a .375 hitting percentage.

  • The Chargers outhit the Blue Jays, .177 to .080.

UMB 3, USJ 0 (25-9, 25-13, 25-21)

  • UMass Boston took control early in the first set, racing out to a 9-2 lead thanks to four early kills.

  • Harris and Weiss combined for points at the net, but the Beacons' serving pressure (four aces in the set) helped secure a 25-9 win.

  • In set two, USJ opened with energy, earning early points from Weiss and junior right side Karla Flores (Oakdale, Conn.) to even the score 3-3.

  • UMass Boston quickly countered with a 7-1 stretch, and despite kills from Harris and Dugas, the Beacons pulled away for a 25-13 result.

  • The third was USJ's strongest set of the day, highlighted by kills from Harris, Weiss, and Flores, along with a service ace from Pawloski to stay close at 15-12.

  • The Blue Jays cut the deficit to 21-19 after a Harris winner, but UMB finished with four of the last five points to take the frame, 25-21, and the sweep.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE

  • Harris paced the attack again with five kills and seven digs.

  • E. Dugas added five kills and five digs.

  • Wanner dished out 12 assists and contributed defensively with double-digit digs.

  • A. Dugas recorded 14 digs to lead the back row.

  • Weiss and Flores combined for four blocks.

  • The Beacons outhit USJ, .161 to -.020.

The Blue Jays travel to Regis College for a Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) tri-match against the Pride and Norwich University on Saturday, September 27. USJ first takes on Regis at 10:00 a.m. before battling with Norwich at 12:00 p.m. at Higgins Court in Weston, Mass.
