HOW IT HAPPENED
-
Rivier jumped out to an early lead in the opening set behind a pair of aces and several quick kills, forcing an early USJ timeout at 7-2.
-
The Blue Jays regrouped and began to chip away, using a balanced attack led by junior outside hitter Shaye Harris (Bloomfield, Conn.) and graduate outside hitter Emilia Dugas (Newington, Conn.) to rally back.
-
A strong service run from senior defensive specialist Tatianah Ziegler (Troy, N.Y.) fueled a 6-0 stretch that helped USJ grab a 14-12 advantage.
-
The set remained tight down the stretch, with Harris notching a late kill to keep the Blue Jays within one, but the Raiders secured the final two points to take the frame, 25-23.
-
The second set opened with another Rivier run, this time a 4-0 burst powered by kills from Savannah Dunne and Sam Driend. USJ answered with back-to-back aces from Harris and a pair of kills from Dugas to even the score at four apiece.
-
Despite the push, the Raiders regained momentum midway through the set, capitalizing on Blue Jay attack errors to extend their lead and claim the second, 25-15.
-
In the third, USJ started strong and led 5-2 early thanks to a kill and block from junior middle blocker Sofia Weiss (Babylon, N.Y.).
-
The Raiders responded with a dominant service stretch from Lily Seibel, recording four consecutive aces as part of a 9-0 run to swing the set in their favor.
-
The Blue Jays fought back behind kills from Harris, Dugas, and junior right side Karla Flores (Oakdale, Conn.), but the Raiders held off the rally to close out the match, 25-19.
