Bio

Karen Nell begins her sixth season as head coach of the University of Saint Joseph (USJ) field hockey program in 2026 after becoming the inaugural head coach when the program launched in 2021. In her first five seasons leading the Blue Jays, USJ has compiled a 32-54 overall record, including a 22-34 mark in Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) play. Nell has also coached 11 All-GNAC selections during her tenure.

The 2025 season saw the Blue Jays continue their growth as a program, earning a postseason berth for the second consecutive year after finishing with a 10-9 overall record and a 5-5 mark in GNAC play. The 2024 campaign was a historic one for USJ, as Nell guided the Blue Jays to the most successful season in program history with an 11-8 record and a berth in the GNAC Tournament. Earlier in her tenure, Nell led the Blue Jays to their first postseason appearance in just the program's second season of competition in 2022.

In addition to the team's success on the field, USJ student-athletes have consistently excelled in the classroom under Nell's leadership. Since the program's inception, 60 Blue Jays have earned recognition on the National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA) Division III National Academic Squad.

Prior to joining USJ, Nell spent 12 seasons as head field hockey coach and seven seasons as head girls lacrosse coach at New Fairfield High School. During her tenure with the girls lacrosse program, Nell led the Rebels to three consecutive CIAC Class S State Championships from 2017-19, as well as back-to-back South-West Conference Championships in 2018 and 2019. She compiled a 124-32 record in seven seasons and was named the Connecticut Class S Coach of the Year following the 2018 campaign.

Nell also enjoyed tremendous success as New Fairfield's field hockey coach, posting a 148-76-24 record over 12 seasons. She guided the Rebels to the 2008 CIAC Class S State Championship and was named the News-Times Coach of the Year. In addition, Nell helped establish a youth field hockey program in the area and has directed camps in conjunction with World Camp USA throughout the New Fairfield region.

Nell also spent a season at the collegiate level as an assistant women's lacrosse coach at Division III Western Connecticut State University in 2015. During her time with the Colonials, WCSU posted a 10-8 overall record and a 4-2 mark in Little East Conference (LEC) play while advancing to the second round of the LEC Tournament. The season marked just the fourth winning campaign in program history since the university began sponsoring women's lacrosse in 2000.

A former field hockey student-athlete at Boston College, Nell's playing career was cut short due to injury. She later earned an associate degree in physical therapy from Housatonic Community College before obtaining a bachelor's degree in psychology from Charter Oak State College.
