Lax Drops Game to Rivier
WEST HARTFORD, Conn. -- Erika Leitao (Southington, Conn.) scored two goals for the University of Saint Joseph, but Rivier scored an 18-4 Great Northeast Athletic Conference victory Saturday at St. Joseph.
Rivier improved to 6-3 overall and 3-2 in the GNAC; St. Joseph is 2-7 overall and 1-6 in the league.
Dayna Gambino (Newington, Conn.) got the Blue Jays on the board first with a goal 83 seconds into the game. But Rivier kept USJ off the board for the remainder of the half and built a 9-1 lead at intermission.
USJ scored first again in the second half on Leitao's first goal, but three consecutive tallies by Rivier kept the Raiders in control. Haley Tufano (Farmington, Conn.) scored a second-half goal for St. Joseph and Eliza Doane (Suffield, Conn.) and Francesca Mastria (Higganum, Conn.) each had an assist.
Despite the final score, the Blue Jays were competitive for large portions of time and Rivier only finished with a slight edge in total shots, 29-25. But the Raiders received 11 saves from goalkeeper Danielle Moran (San Diego, Calif.), who thwarted numerous excellent chances by USJ. Elena Reilly (Braintree, Mass.) led Rivier with five goals.
St. Joseph plays at Daniel Webster, Thur. April 11 at 4 p.m.
