Lacrosse Edged By Monks, 19-12

PORTLAND, Maine – University of Saint Joseph junior Erika Leitao (Southington, Conn.) and sophomore Dayna Gambino (Newington, Conn.) scored three goals apiece but the Blue Jays dropped a 19-12 Great Northeast Athletic Conference game to the Monks of St. Joseph's College of Maine Wednesday.

The Monks improved to 10-5 overall and 6-2 in the GNAC; The Blue Jays are 3-8 overall and 1-7 in the conference.

Gambino and Eliza Doane (Suffield, Conn.) had goals for USJ in the first nine minutes to have the Blue Jays within 3-2 at that stage of the game. But a seven-goal run allowed the Monks to take control at 10-2 with 4:56 left in the half. Francesca Mastria (Higganum, Conn.), Leitao and Gambino scored goals as USJ had a run of its own to close within 10-5, though St. Joseph's College would lead 13-5 at halftime.

Leitao's second goal of the game brought USJ within 14-8 with 17:44 remaining, but that's as close as the Blue Jays could get. Rachel Foster (Newington, Conn.) and Mastria each had two goals for USJ and Doane and Justine Mojsa (Newington, Conn.) had single tallies. Leitao also had two assists and a team-high seven ground balls. Brianna Tenore (Rocky Hill, Conn.) made 11 saves in goal.

St. Joseph next plays at Lasell in a GNAC game Sat. April 20 at 1 p.m.
